First step, before even searching for lawyer’s offices you should learn about your legal problem by searching the internet for instance. When having a case, you should get information about the area of law is concerned by your case, the type of jurisdiction, if your case needs require a small or large lawyer’s office. You will not waste time contacting lawyers which are not suited for your case.
Second you have plenty of tools to use to search for a lawyer. Most people start with the internet. Internet is the most convenient way to browse through attorney directory. Some website also offers a free review of your case or with others you can submit a request and a lawyer, interested in your case, contacts you afterwards. Attorney organizations, such as the national association or your state or city bar associations, list lawyers according to the type of law they are specialized in. The advantage is that almost every lawyer association has an attorney referral service. Obviously you should also consult with your family your accountant, realtor or other professional.
After using these different media, you will have a list of names. But you need to narrow down this list to three or four of lawyer. In order to make your selection, you can find out if they have expertise in the area of law that you need, how long his experience is, what kind of clients the attorney represents (individual or companies), if the lawyer has a good standing with the state bar association. You can also ask other people if they have heard of the lawyers and what they think about them.
Normally you should have a short list of two or three names. At this point you have to contact the attorney’s firm and ask to schedule a consultation. Do not be surprised if the attorney cannot meet with you on short notice. On the other hand, a wait of more than a week is a sign that the attorney may be too busy to give a new case such as yours the time and attention it requires, which another selection criteria. Eventually, you will make your final choice during the consultation with the lawyer, which is the most important factor in your decision to hire an attorney.
