What is the Cost of Hiring a Lawyer?

For everybody who already hired a lawyer, he will tell you that legal services cost a lot. So before having a lawyer you should ask yourself how much you are willing to spend. When you're shopping for legal services, you should always ask potential attorneys to fully explain their fees and billing practices. Do not hesitate to ask detailed questions and do not be embarrassed. A lawyer's willingness to discuss fees is an important indicator of how he or she treats clients.

Lawyers have their billing system including hourly, flat, retainer and contingency fees. But the pricing of those fees will be determined by many factors. The cost of lawyer is indeed influenced by the amount of effort and time the case requires, if you will live in an urban or rural areas, by the outcome of the case and the risk of no recovery if you are charged on a contingency basis, if the lawyer is well known and experienced in a particular area of law, and by all the processing costs. All these elements will impact on the total cost of a lawyer.

Basically, how much you will have to pay? Most lawyers bill by the hour. So you wonder what the average hourly rate for a lawyer is. However, if you want to have estimation, it is necessary make a difference according to your location. Believe it or not, rates may vary between locations from $50 an hour to a $1,000 an hour or more. For example, lawyers in Los Angeles would charge more than in Wichita. In rural areas and small towns, lawyers tending to charge less, fees typically range from $100 to $200 an hour if you hire an experienced lawyer. Conversely, in major metropolitan areas, the norm is probably closer to $200 to $400 an hour. Lawyers with expertise in specialized areas may charge even more. In addition, you will likely be charged at an hourly rate for paralegals and other support staff. For instance, a good paralegal’s time may be billed out at $50 to a $100 an hour or perhaps more. It would not be unusual for a legal secretary’s time on things like document production to be billed out at perhaps $25 to $50 an hour.

As for the expenses and court costs, there are no averages and it is hardly possible to give an accurate estimation. You should carefully discuss with your lawyer and anticipate any miscellaneous costs so that you can estimate those costs up front and avoid any unpleasant surprises. Be prepared to scrutinize court costs, filing fees, secretarial time, and delivery charges.

Is it Possible to Find Free Lawyers?

The availability of free doctors is not as prevalent as many think. In many personal injury cases and auto accident cases, lawyers will tend to set up what are called a "No win No fee" contract. It means that if you win your case, you do not have to pay. That is because your lawyer will get their money from the opposing lawyer. But if you lose, then you are subject to their payments. Make sure you know what that would be ahead of time before you go ahead with your case.

Another interesting thing to point out is that if your case stands to gain a lot of notoriety and public attention then a lawyer may want to take your case for free. Think about all of the free PR that lawyer would get just by representing you. It is worth the money. So if you have a case that you feel is extraordinary, you should consider contacting several media organizations first and get your case out there before contacting lawyers. But then again, this may be an issue as well since you should technically have the guidance of a lawyer before going public with your information. All in all, these things are touchy and generally you would have to pay for an experienced attorney. But they have legal aid which is free in some areas of the country.
